There are two ways to create a bootable install drive for Mavericks, the new simpler way which we recommend, and the more complex way, the simpler trick will also install the Recovery partition, whereas the secondary method does not necessarily do that for all users. If you intend on installing Mavericks on other Macs without having to re-download it on each machine, you will want to copy that installer outside of /Applications/ before attempting the installation, otherwise the self-installer will remove itself upon completion.

Don’t forget to prepare your Mac for the Mavericks update, but if you’re impatient, at the very least you need to start a Time Machine backup manually before installing the OS X 10.9 update.
